O movimento #slow está por todo o lado: slow food, slow living, slow cities, slow school, slow shampoo (adoro!), slow consumption … e, é claro, também slow fashion too!

The #slow movement is everywhere, slow food, slow living, slow cities, slow school, slow shampoo (I’m totally in), slow consumption … and of course slow fashion too!

Ontem o Monocle Minute Saturday edition publicou aqui um artigo sobre o debate relativo à sustentabilidade na moda, apresentando duas iniciativas: o Mayet Collective - designers focados na produção transparente (no clube Conduit em Mayfair) – e a abertura do Fashion for Good Museum em Amsterdão. Estando interessada em ler mais sobre slow fashion já há algum tempo, foi a leitura deste artigo que me fez juntar a outras vozes (este é um slow post, muna-se de paciência e de um slow snack ).

The yesterday Monocle Minute Saturday edition published here an article on the debate about sustainable fashion and the ways of doing more than just talk about it, presenting two ventures: the Mayet Collective – designers focused on transparent production (Conduit member’s club in Mayfair) – and the opening of the Fashion for Good Museum in Amsterdam. Being interested in knowing more about slow fashion for some time now, this article pushed me to join other voices and to post on the subject (this is a long post, get your slow snack).

A moda é uma das indústrias mais bonitas e mais criativas, mas é também uma das mais poluentes. Todos nós estamos preocupados com o plástico (especialmente nos oceanos), com o aquecimento global, com as emissões de gases com efeito de estufa, vamos então pensar também em moda sustentável. O ritmo da indústria e o lançamento de várias coleções ao longo do ano aceleram a nossa relação com a moda e criam uma agitação que chega mesmo a impedir que nos possamos divertir e gozar a moda com calma. Vamos parar – a moda também pode ser vivida de forma diferente e mais tranquila.

Fashion is one of the most beautiful and creative industries but it is also one of the highest polluting. All of us are concerned about plastic (especially in the oceans), global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, let’s also be more into slow fashion. The rhythm of fashion and the launching of several collections over the year speed up our relation with fashion and sometimes prevent us from enjoying and relaxing but fashion can also be lived differently and more slowly.

Todos juntos podemos fazer a diferença. As nossas pequenas ações individuais contam!

Each and every one of us can make a difference. Individual small actions count!

Recuso-me a ser uma fundamentalista do ambiente, mas estou comprometida em diminuir minha pegada ecológica e em viver a vida mais tranquilamente.

While refusing to become environmental obsessed I’m committed both in easing my green footprint and in living more slowly.

Aqui ficam os meus mandamentos slow fashion (trata-se naturalmente de sugestões para mulheres adultas e não para raparigas muito jovens):

-     O meu guarda-roupa tem cada vez mais clássicos e básicos que durem muito tempo. Com o passar dos anos, tento comprar menos peças tendência e mais peças clássicas. Isto permite-me gostar das coisas por muito mais tempo e usá-las até a exaustão;

-     My closet is increasingly made of long lasting garments and of basics. As time goes by I try to buy less trendy clothes and more classic pieces. By doing so I love them for much longer and wear them until exhaustion;

-     Ter um guarda-roupa baseado sobretudo em peças clássicas permite substituir menos peças ano após ano - pare de dar (ou vender) metade do seu guarda-roupa cada vez que muda a estação do ano, tente limitar a substituição a 5 a 10% do seu armário (vai sentir-se muito mais feliz e tranquila);
-     Having a closet based especially on classic garments allows you to replace less pieces year after year – stop donating or selling half of your closet each time you organize it, try to limit the replacement to 5 to 10% of your closet (you will feel much happier and relaxed);

-     As peças clássicas podem ser guardadas por um ano ou dois e postas novamente a uso mais tarde, o seu armário vai parecer renovado e você não se vai fartar dessas roupas;

-    For classic items you may store them away for a year or two and wear them again later on, your closet will look renewed and you won’t get fed up of these garments;

-    As marcas de fast fashion não são as melhores lojas para comprar peças que queremos que durem muitos anos, mas se puder aumentar o seu orçamento para roupa só um pouco mais, escolha marcas como COS, Uterque ou Massimo Dutti, onde vai encontrar bom design (logo, durável) e qualidade a preços muito simpáticos;

-    Fast fashion is not the best place to buy long lasting items, but if you can increase you budget a little further go for labels as COS, Uterque or Massimo Dutti where you will find both design and quality at very nice prices;

-     Contudo, se seu orçamento não permitir mais do que as marcas de fast fashion, gaste algum tempo a procurar bem as peças com melhor design e qualidade. A ZARA ou HM, por exemplo, têm excelentes calças pretas, camisas brancas, camisolas de cachemira, blazers e sobretudos que podem durar uma vida. Leia atentamente a composição do tecido e procure as maiores percentagens de algodão, lã, linho, seda ou outros componentes naturais (ainda que pelo facto de serem naturais não significa por si só que sejam menos poluentes);

-     If your budget doesn’t allow more than the current fast fashion, spend some time looking for the items with the better design and quality. ZARA or H&M for instance have beautiful black trousers, white shirts, cashmeres, blazers and overcoats. Read carefully the fabric composition and look for high percentages of cotton, wool, linen, silk or other natural components (being aware that natural fibers are not always more environmental friendly);

-    Explore novas marcas nacionais com pequenas produções. Há muitas lojas novas on-line onde os preços podem ser um pouco mais altos, mas que são geralmente marcas amigas do ambiente e socialmente responsáveis. Ainda assim, não se deixe impressionar pelo marketing e informe-se bem!

-     Explore new brands, small productions, local based labels. There are plenty of new online shops, prices may be a bit higher but these labels are usually environmental friendly. Yet don´t get impressed by marketing ploys – get informed!;

-    Leia as instruções de lavagem e secagem e siga-as à risca. Isto permitir-lhe-á prolongar a vida útil das suas roupas (as peças da ZARA podem durar vários anos se forem bem lavadas, secas e guardadas). Os tecidos não envelhecem todos da mesma maneira, mas os tecidos mesmo com um ar antigo também podem ser bonitos se não estiverem danificados;

-    Read the washing and drying instructions and follow them carefully, this will allow you to make the life of your garments longer (items from ZARA can last for several years if well preserved, washed and stored). Fabrics don’t grow old all in the same way but old fabrics can be beautiful too if they are not damaged;

-     Evite comprar por impulso e aprenda a desejar. Pense duas vezes (três ou quatro ...), namore longamente as peças da sua Wish List, relaxe e não tenha medo que elas acabem (as lojas on-line têm sempre stock depois de os artigos acabarem na loja). Espere duas ou três semanas e compre só depois, vai ser muito mais divertido.

-    Control your buying impulse, think twice (three times, four times, …), flirt the items in your Wish List for some time, relax and don’t be afraid they are over (online shops always have stock after an article ends in the shop). Wait for two or three weeks and buy them afterwards, you will enjoy much more.

-     Ouça a sua filha de vinte e poucos anos e aprenda com ela – as raparigas são muito mais #slow e conscientes do que nós!

-    Listen and learn from your twenty-something daughter – she is for sure much more in the #slow movement than you are!
